We have all heard the commercials, seen the billboards, and remembered the lines verbatim. Bigger is better..........but is it? That is the age-old question that seems to be back in style.
I’m sure there are some perceived advantages to going with the big law firm but are those advantages real or just perceived? For example, is a steak better if it comes from a national chain or is it better if it comes from a mom-and-pop restaurant, is an accountant with a national accounting firm better than a solo practitioner? I guess it is all in what you perceive as being better. If you go to the mom and pop restaurant, you get to meet mom and pop; if you go to the local accountant, you get to meet the person doing your taxes. They get to meet you, and you develop a relationship with the person helping you.
Sure, in the “big firms”, I guess you could meet your attorney in the, but in all likelihood, to be a big firm, they have to spread themselves thin and make your primary point of contact a case manager, a paralegal or some other employee of the “big firm.”
Do you have your big firm attorney’s cell phone number? Not his/her work cell phone but his/her personal cell phone number? My clients have my personal cell phone, the one my family and friends call me on because we treat our clients the way we treat our friends and family. While of course, my clients speak with my case managers and other employees as well, they know that if they need me or simply would rather talk to me, they can call or text me on my cell, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
In the over 80 years of combined experience at Retamar & Millian, we cannot tell you how many times we have received calls from clients of big firms complaining they signed up with the big firms and now 6, 12 months in, have never spoken with their attorney. There are too many times to be able to count.
Now, this is no way meant to disparage big firms or say that they do not have very good attorneys and staff at big firms; they do. In fact, we have friends at big firms; there are incredibly talented and intelligent people at big firms. However, the point is just because something is big does not necessarily mean better or more talented or more educated or more qualified.
