Speeding is one of the most common prevalent factors in traffic accidents in the US. It’s also made a large financial impact on Americans. Speed related car accidents cost us over $40 billion dollars a year as of 2019. The safety impact of speeding is also extreme. For over two decades of time speeding has contributed to one=third of all the motor vehicle fatalities. Over 10,000 people were killed as a result of speeding in the US in the year 2016.

Florida Speeds:

In the state of Florida there are general standards for speed. Anything over this is considered unreasonable driving:

• 30 mph in business or residential districts. Fla. Stat. 316.183
• 70 mph in limited access highways Fla. Stat. 316.187
• 55 mph in other locations

Impacts of Speeding:

When a driver is speeding their ability to safely steer around curves or hazards in the road is reduced. They also extend stopping distance of the vehicle, as well as increases the amount of distance traveled before the driver would have time to react to a dangerous and unexpected situation.

When it comes to fatal crashes, the majority of speed related drivers are young males. The correlation between speed related clashes and other crashes decrease with as driver’s age increases. Drivers that are between the ages of 15-20 have the highest representation in speed related fatalities, approximately 30% in 2016.

Speeding and Alcohol:

There is also correlation between being under the influence and speeding. It was found in 2010 that 42% of speeding drivers who contributed to fatal crashes had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher. Alcohol and speeding are a dangerous combination.

In a 2016 survey by Everquote 43% of drivers confirmed that they do not consider going 10 mph over the posted speed limit to be speeding. National data shows that merely a 10 mph speed increases the risk of a crash by 9.1%.
