Unfortunately for us, human beings were not built to sustain some kinds of impact, such as that which is caused by a vehicle crashing. Our heads weigh approximately 10 pounds, and sit upon our neck, both the most flexible and least reinforced area of our spine. The 32 joints, as well as other parts, of our neck are easily injured in a forceful impact. If the joints in our neck become stretched or strained beyond their regular capacity they may become incapable of going back to their original length.
Whiplash can be a very serious concern. If you’ve sustained whiplash or any other injury from an automobile accident please contact Retamar & Millian, P.A.

What is Whiplash?:
Vehicles are not like the human body. They are solid heavy objects designed to withstand a certain degree of impact and minimize the transfer of energy. When two of these powerhouse objects collide it equals a force of thousands of pounds. This force is pushed upon a person’s neck and spine in the vehicle. The human neck cannot control or support the weight of the head in this situation and it is thrust into the direction of the incoming vehicle. That sudden movement experienced by the head of forwards, backwards or sideways is called whiplash.
Medically it is cervical acceleration/deceleration (CAD) trauma or syndrome. This refers to the rapid movements which injure the vertebrae of the neck the muscles and ligaments which support them. At this time the muscles and tissue stretch past their physical limitations and tension builds, causing the muscles to snap or whip violently in the opposite direction.
Effects of Whiplash:
This process is a trauma on the body during which the soft discs between spinal bones can be torn and stretched; vertebrae can be pushed out of normal positioning which decreases ones range of motion. This can also affect the spinal cord and nerve roots in your neck, causing them to also be stretched and irritated. The end result is an injury to your muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints of your neck. This can cause many symptoms such as headaches, pain in the shoulders, arms, neck and hands, dizziness, lower back pain and trouble turning and bending.
It’s also possible for bruising of the brain to occur, causing one to experience blurred vision, nausea, ringing in the ears and numbness.
